 대부분의 [[민마타]] 부족들에게 있어서, 전쟁에 나가기 전 자신의 얼굴에 그림을 그리는 행위는 매우 오랜 전통이다. 옛날 호전적이었던 일부 부족들은 더 나아가 얼굴에 일종의 문신을 그려 넣었는데, 이는 곧 영구적인 전쟁용 문신이 되었다. 이러한 전쟁용 문신의 단점은 그것이 영구적인 속성을 지녔다는 데 있다. 그 때문에 해당 행위는 별로 보편화되지 않았는데, 왜냐하면 전쟁용 문신을 통해 자신의 적대감을 다른 자들에게 보이는 일은 모든 종류의 개인간 교류에 있어 똑같이 좋은 결과를 낳지는 않았기 때문이다.
